Lifelines è il settimo album della band norvegese, pubblicato nel 2002. L’album è entrato nella Top 10 in nove paesi, raggiungendo la prima posizione in 4 di questi e vendendo nel mondo oltre 1,5 milioni di copie.
Prima della pubblicazione del nuovo album, gli a-ha hanno partecipato nuovamente al concerto per il Premio Nobel della Pace nel 2001, esibendosi con un brano nuovo “Differences” e il brano storico “Hunting High and Low”.

Il brano nuovo fu pubblicato come singolo, ma mai incluso nell’album in uscita, Lifelines. Gli a-ha hanno abituato i loro fan a video sempre sorprendenti e mai banali. Anche il video del singolo “Lifelines” ha una sua peculiarità tecnica: è basato su un cortometraggio del regista Morten Skallerud – A Year along the abandoned road (Året gjennom Børfjord 1991) – della durata di 12 minuti ma che mostra il trascorrere di un anno “condensato” in scene accelerate 50.000 volte la velocità normale.
Il video del primo singolo – Forever not yours – è stato, invece, girato a La Havana, Cuba con il regista Harald Zwart (lo stesso del video scandalo “Velvet”). La sceneggiatura è ispirata alla vicenda dell’arca di Noé trasposta ai giorni nostri dove oltre agli animali, si devono salvare anche alcune celebrità. Tra i figuranti e le comparse sono stati selezionati i sosia di Madonna, della Regina Elisabetta II, Lenny Kravitz, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu e molti altri.
Per la copertina, ancora una volta, gli a-ha non compaiono, ma hanno preferito affidare la grafica all’artista Andy Frank, il quale durante le riprese del video ad Havana ha scattato delle foto da utilizzare per la copertina e il progetto grafico del booklet interno. Sulla copertina dell’album è rappresentato un dettaglio dello Stadio Jose Martin Parque, mentre all’interno del libretto ci sono foto di un vecchio teatro cubano così come le tipiche macchine americane old style che girano per le strade di Havana.
Le tappe dell’era Lifelines
- Il 19 febbraio 2002 esce il video del singolo “Forever not yours”, diretto da Harald Zwart.
- 5 marzo 2002 inizia la promozione del nuovo album in Germania; nei tre mesi successivi, gli a-ha viaggiano in Germania, Norvegia, Francia, Svizzera, Danimarca, Svezia, Austria.
- 8 giugno 2002 gli a-ha danno il via al tour partendo da un concerto nello Stadio Ullevål (Oslo). Prima del tour, gli a-ha si sono esibiti in un concerto privato riservato a un pubblico ristretto di 800 persone all’Oslo Spektrum. L’evento – noto con il nome di Afternoon High – ha visto il susseguirsi di numerose band scandinave prima dell’esibizione degli a-ha. Il tour mondiale si compone di 44 date in 18 paesi diversi tra cui Europa dell’est, Brasile, Germania, Regno Unito. La moglie di Pål Waktaar – Lauren Savoy – riprende il tour e alcuni estratti vengono utilizzati per realizzare il video del brano “Did anyone approach you?”, di cui la stessa Lauren è regista.
- 8 luglio 2002 esce il singolo “Lifelines”, prima in Germania e poi negli altri paesi.
- 7 dicembre 2002, nonostante il tour mondiale sia stato ufficialmente concluso a Dublino il 16 ottobre, gli a-ha partecipano ad altri due show: il festival austriaco di Zell Am See e un’esibizione al Volkswagen Arena di Wolfsburg il 13 Dicembre.
In seguito al tour del 2002, viene pubblicato a marzo 2003 un album live dal titolo How can I sleep with your voice in my head, in cui viene incluso anche l‘esibizione live della hit The Sun always shines on TV del 1986. Nel 2004, intanto, viene pubblicata la biografia ufficiale dal titolo The swing of things a cura di Jan Omdhal che contiene al suo interno un CD con una collezione di materiale inedito e singoli (The Definitive Singles Collection 1984-2004) che riporta gli a-ha nella Top 20 inglese, raggiungendo il 13° posto e ottenendo un Album d’oro. La biografia fa particolare scalpore perché, per la prima volta, gli a-ha parlano apertamente dei loro contrasti e delle rispettive ostilità sul lavoro.
Intanto, gli a-ha non si fermano e il 2 luglio 2005 sono invitati a partecipare all’edizione del Live 8 di Berlino dinanzi una variegata folla di 200 mila spettatori. Lo show si è rivelato un insuccesso per gli a-ha a causa di evidenti problemi di audio e una gestione del suono inadeguata per la band: dopo l’esecuzione di Hunting High and low e Take one me, Morten Harket ha evidenti difficoltà con i suoi auricolari e chiede una pausa di due minuti che diventano 7. Al rientro eseguono il brano Summer moved on che sarà l’ultimo brano del set sui quattro previsti, infatti avendo terminato il loro tempo a disposizione, gli organizzatori invitano la band a lasciare il palco.
Archiviata l’esperienza Live 8, gli a-ha si rifanno a New York il 12 settembre 2005 con un concerto all’Irving Plaza che è subito sold out, nonostante gli a-ha manchino dagli USA dal 1986 e non pubblicano i loro album dal 1993.
In quell’occasione, durante la visita a New York, gli a-ha improvvisano “Take on me” a Times Square con dei musicisti di strada, con grande sorpresa dei passanti
Rientrati in patria, il 27 agosto 2005 la band si esibisce in un memorabile concerto gratuito al Frogner Park di Oslo per celebrare i 100 anni della società idroelettrica Hydro; si esibiscono dinanzi a 120.000 spettatori segnando un altro record: il più grande concerto mai realizzato in Norvegia. È l’occasione per presentare i nuovi brani del prossimo album…

Segue la traduzione del brano “Differences” pubblicato come singolo insieme a Forever not yours, ma mai incluso in un album. Il brano è stato eseguito per la prima volta in occasione del concerto per il Premio Nobel della Pace del 2001 e sempre molto attuale (video non ufficiale).
“Differences” – Diversità

[1] Lifelines sono le linee della vita sul palmo della mano, che in chiromanzia indicano il percorso di vita di una persona e su cui è scritto il “destino”
[2] Sebbene sia più semplice optare per la traduzione “Mai tuo”, non si sarebbe mantenuto il significato più “alto” dell’espressione e del testo. “ Forever” (= per sempre) non è il logico contrario di “Never” (=mai), in quanto il “per sempre” implica una dimensione spazio-temporale che va oltre i limiti e i confini temporali umani e corporei. Mentre il “mai” si esaurisce con la fine della vita, il “per sempre” implica un concetto di “eternità” che va oltre la vita umana. Affermare di essere “per sempre non tuo” è una considerazione più dolorosa della fine di un amore, la consapevolezza che nonostante si siano trascorsi dei momenti di felicità insieme nella vita, questa felicità non potrà essere perpetrata “per sempre”, in una dimensione mistico-escatologica più ampia. “Per sempre non tuo/a” è una mancanza eterna che non si esaurisce con la morte, ma va oltre. Nell’interpretazione ironica del video, questo concetto si applica anche al successo, al rapporto tra idoli e gente comune e alle distanze tra i vip e gli altri, distanze che cadono quando ci si ritrova tutti “dall’altra parte”.
[3] Time and again o Time and time again è un’espressione idiomatica che significa “molto spesso, frequentemente, ripetutamente”
