Il 17 luglio 2019, gl a-ha pubblicano il loro nono album in studio: Foot of the mountain e il secondo con l’etichetta della Universal. I brani “Riding the crest” e “Shadowside” furono presentati in anteprima nel corso di due concerti svoltisi nel 2008 rispettivamente a Oslo e a Londra.
Le sonorità dell’album ricordano quelle degli album di esordio con l’uso di sintetizzatori, ma con una maturità e una professionalità diversa e più consapevole maturata negli anni. L’album si compone di 10 brani in cui la band dimostra di saper passare da un genere all’altro con qualità e destrezza, sempre impreziosisti dallo spessore e qualità vocale del cantante Morten Harket che contribuisce – come per gli album precedenti – a dare l’impronta al sound del gruppo.
La copertina dell’album è stata curata da Martin Kvamme che a sua volta ha elaborato una foto di Guy Berryman, uno dei componenti del gruppo dei Coldplay (noti estimatori della band norvegese). Le foto della band per la promozione, invece, sono state curate dal fotografo norvegese Stian Andersen. L’album viene promosso in Gran Bretagna a partire dal 27 luglio 2019 entrando direttamente al n. 5 della classifica degli album più venduti, segnando il più alto nuovo ingresso della settimana.
Foot of the mountain era destinato a essere l’ultimo album della band prima dell’annuncio del loro ritiro dalle scene alla fine del 2010.
I brani contenuti nell’album sono, in realtà, una ripresa di pezzi, composizioni e ritornelli di brani editi o inediti di Magne Furuholmen e Pål Waaktaar rimasterizzati e riadattati. I brani ancora una volta non sono banali, né scontati, non sono facili da cantare rendendo ancor più “funambolico” il lavoro del cantante. Il brano di apertura The Bandstand, per esempio, contiene il riff elaborato al sintetizzatore di un brano di Magne Furuholmen – Come Back – originariamente su pianoforte che Pål ha modificato negli accordi e nel testo, mentre gli accordi delle strofe sono interamente estrapolati dal brano Come back di Magne. Il sound anni ’80 si ritrova pienamente nei brani Riding the Crest e What There is. Il brano che, invece, da’ il titolo all’album – Foot of the mountain – ha il suo punto di partenza dal brano The Longest night tratto dall’album solista di Magne a cui è stato cambiato il ritornello.
Le sonorità anni ’80 permeano la maggior parte degli altri brani, da Real Meaning – più elettronico – a Nothing is Keeping you here, Mother nature goes to heaven, Sunny mistery mentre Shadowside è una ballata pop con influssi folk norvegesi e l’ultimo brano Start the Simulator è decisamente il brano elettronico più sperimentale e innovativo mai composto da Pål Waaktaar Savoy.
Le tappe di Foot of the Mountain
Dopo l’evento di maggio 2018 “A night with …” in cui gli a-ha si esibiscono singolarmente e in finale insieme con un brano inedito, trascorrono il resto dell’anno alla preparazione dell’album in arrivo e il 25 marzo 2009, dunque, dopo aver trascorso gran parte del 2008 lavorando in sala di incisione per la registrazione del nuovo album, la band torna alle esibizioni live con tre inattese date in Sud America: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro e al Pepsi Music Festival di Santiago del Cile. La band si arricchisce di nuovi elementi: il batterista Karl Oluf Wennerberg e il bassista/tastierista Erik Ljunggren.
Il 24 aprile, la band annuncia a sorpresa con una premiére su internet il nuovo singolo “Foot of the mountain”. Il mese successivo – durante la promozione del singolo in Germania – gli a-ha ne approfittano per girare il video per la regia di Olaf Heine (19 maggio 2009). Il tour promozionale vede la partecipazione degli a-ha al Germany’s Next top Model a Colonia, al Dome di Monaco e all’Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards di Londra.
Il 2 Agosto, Foot of the Mountain entra al 5° posto delle classifiche britanniche, la più alta new entry della settimana.
Nonostante il grande successo e l’imminente inizio del Foot of the Mountain Tour, il gruppo annuncia a sorpresa il 15 ottobre 2009 l’intenzione di ritirarsi dalle scene entro la fine del 2010, al termine degli impegni concorrenti e dando contestualmente l’annuncio di un tour mondiale di addio che si sarebbe concluso il 4 dicembre 2010 all’Oslo Spektrum. I biglietti per l’ultimo concerto furono messi in vendita il giorno dopo l’annuncio e andarono immediatamente sold out.
Intanto, il 27 ottobre 2009, il gruppo da il via al Foot of the Mountain tour con la prima data a Colonia (Germania). Il tour includeva 18 concerti in 8 paesi e si concludeva a Tokyo (Giappone) il 25 novembre … ma la storia non sarebbe finita così!

[1] Forse sarebbe più incisivo tradurre con Madre Natura va a “”farsi benedire” perché il senso di questo brano dal respiro ambientalista è l’inamovibilità delle iniziative umane dinanzi allo stato di fatto di una Natura in lenta agonia. Lo stesso titolo è una “modifica” del modo di dire “To go to Hell – andare all’Inferno”, ma Madre Natura è “naturalmente” buona e non va all’inferno, ma in Paradiso, (Mother Nature doesn’t go to Hell, but goes to Heaven).
